VMASC Visits Savona & Genoa Simulation Team Labs

On October 19 and 20, VMASC faculty researchers John Sokolowski and Catherine Banks met with engineering and M&S faculty and students at the University of Genoa in Genoa, Italy. The purpose of the meeting was to share current research activities and procure future opportunities for collaboration. An emphasis was placed on three research domains: transportation, military M&S (specific to NATO), and human behavior modeling.

The two-day meetings began with an introduction to DIPTEM, the University of Genoa’s Department of Production Engineering, Thermo-energy, and Mathematical Modeling. Dr. Agostino Bruzzone, MISS (McLeod Institute of Simulation Sciences) and DIPTEM Director, served as host. He provided a detailed presentation of the Department’s body of research. DIPTEM complements the VMASC research effort by sharing their expertise of SITRANET (SImulation for TRAiniNg & Education in Transportation), a project sponsored by European Community.

Sokolowski and Banks made two presentations to DIPTEM graduate students: an overview of VMASC as a research and development Center, and a recent research project in the form of a case study utilizing agent-based modeling. The research presentation focused on the usefulness of agent-based modeling and the need to take the paradigm to another level by developing a much more sophisticated agent. Bruzzone and DIPTEM industry partner Albert Tremori of MAST (Management of Advanced Solutions and Technologies) discussed with Sokolowski future work in the areas of Port Security, NATO's Simulation Center of Excellence, and Social Dynamics & Political Support.

The success of the two day meeting was made evident when Bruzzone and Tremori requested a reciprocal visit to VMASC. On November 19 and 20 the two will come to Suffolk.  This will provide opportunities for them to present their research to the M&S faculty, meetings with VMASC industry partners, and a meeting with members of the Hampton Roads Transportation Partnership.
