2008 Capstone Conference

4/10/2008

Eugene Newman and Mike McGinnis with Award recipient Rachel Phillips

The Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center were pleased to host the 2008 Modeling, Simulation & Gaming (MS&G) Student Capstone Conference on April 10, 2008 from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. The annual conference featured students from universities and colleges across the country.  The student research and projects submitted to the conference were central to MS&G.  It is here that students are given a venue to present their findings to members of the modeling and simulation community in academe, industry, and government.   For many of these students their presentations served as a culmination of their research and academic careers.

The 2008 Capstone Conference facilitated five tracks with invited judges from other universities throughout the country along with industry and government partners.  Each track elected a first, second, and third place award for outstanding contributions to modeling and simulation. This year's tracks included: Homeland Security/Military, M&S in Engineering, Discipline of M&S/Body of Knowledge, Medical, and Transportation. The first place winners received a Eugene Newman Award for Excellence in Modeling & Simulation Research in recognition of their excellent research in their track.  These students were recognized at the Capstone Banquet that evening at 6:00 pm. A link to the proceedings is provided below.

The guest speaker for the banquet was Dr. Patrick Driscoll, West Point Military Academy. Also participating in the conference were Old Dominion University Modeling and Simulation faculty who volunteered their time to impart direct support to their students' research by facilitating the various conference tracks and providing overall assistance to this conference. Many thanks for their time and efforts in making this event a success for modeling and simulation research and for its students.
