Executive Director's Welcome

John A. SokolowskiOn behalf of our faculty, staff, and students welcome to the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) at Old Dominion University (ODU). VMASC is a university-level research and development center reporting to the Vice President for Research. Our main facility is located at ODU’s Suffolk, VA campus adjacent to the university’s Tri City Education Center with facilities also in ODU’s Engineering and Computational Sciences building on the main campus.

VMASC was established in 1997 to support research and development of new and improved modeling and simulation techniques, theory, and processes to help grow this expanding field. Originally focused on military modeling and simulation VMASC has leveraged that experience into addressing complex problems in multiple domain areas such as medical, transportation, education, business process engineering, human behavior representation and many others.

Through our affiliation with the Department of Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering under the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology we leverage VMASC’s research capabilities to support both undergraduate and graduate programs in modeling and simulation. Here, students are able to take advantage of our research to enrich their learning and experience and to gain hands on application of modeling and simulation techniques.

VMASC also plays an important role in economic development via the creation of new and innovative techniques that can be leveraged by industry and government. We strongly support collaborative efforts with these sectors of the economy and other academic institutions both here and outside the Commonwealth of Virginia. Together we are striving to move the discipline of modeling and simulation forward as a key factor for maintaining national security and global industrial competitiveness.
