Land-Side Handling: Flow

To keep an orderly flow, container handling equipment travels in a single direction along a pre-determined pathway. This provides orderly access to the crane drop area on one side and to the yard access paths on the other side; a straight pathway crosses under all cranes; entry to the straight pathway is controlled by a loading gang member who coordinates access to this safety-critical portion of the oval; and only gang members and specially trained port employees are allowed in the oval area. An illustration of this pathway is shown at right.

To keep and orderly flow, handling equipment always travels in the same direction along a path.
